Jensen Huang’s “5 Layer Cake” stack, is both a recursive value chain and an interdependent economic ecosystem, where physical inputs continuously drive digital outputs. The five layers consist of energy, chips, infrastructure, models, and applications.
The Recursive Value Chain
- Bottom-up dependency: Every upper tier requires the literal consumption of the layer below it. Energy powers chips, chips build infrastructure, infrastructure trains models, and models run applications.
- Successful applications at the top create economic value, which generates revenue to fund more model training, infrastructure expansion, advanced silicon orders, and power generation.
The Economic Ecosystem
- Full-stack industrialization: Rather than a simple linear supply chain, Huang frames AI as a macro-economic ecosystem touching heavy industry, utility grids, and sovereign policy.
- Economic monetisation occurs primarily at the top application layer (healthcare, manufacturing, finance), while structural leverage and critical limits concentrate at the bottom energy and chip layers.
